Set up in 2001, the Dot NAME top-level domain is the sole TLD intended for personal websites only. These domain names can be personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other titles people are known by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to buy john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already acquired 3rd-level domain names remained active.
